Near Nieuwpoort the river IJzer flows directly into the sea. Due to the combination of fresh and salt water a special biotope developed with mudflats, salt marshes, dunes, beach and polders. The IJzer estuary is 130 hectares of natural beauty where it is an ecological bustle. Approximately 20,000 to 30,000 benthic animals live there per square metre!
