Nieuwpoort

Nieuwpoort came into being in 1163 as a port and was for centuries the main fishing port (for herring fishing) in Belgium. Now the city owns the largest marina in Northern Europe.

During the First World War the famous lock complex 'De Ganzepoot' played an important role and water still plays a major role for the city of Nieuwpoort. The King Albert Monument, a memorial from 1938, is also worth a visit in Nieuwpoort.
